Photography Facts: What You Need to Know Before Your Session
Preparing for a photography session can be both exciting and a bit daunting. Whether you’re gearing up for a family portrait, an engagement shoot, or a professional headshot, there are a few key things you should know to ensure everything goes smoothly. Here’s a fun and engaging guide to help you get ready for your session and make the most of your time in front of the camera!
1. Plan Your Outfit
Choosing the right outfit can make a huge difference in your photos. I always suggest that moms, wives, or partners who are planning the photos choose their outfits first. Often, the others involved are less concerned about what they’re wearing and might not put as much thought into it. So, start with your outfit and build from there!
When selecting outfits, pick a color palette that complements everyone. For families, choose 3-4 colors based on the size of the group. Incorporate 1-2 bold colors to make things pop and 1-2 neutral colors to balance out the look. This approach creates a cohesive appearance without being too matchy-matchy. Limit patterns for a classic look, or go for funky patterns if that suits your style. The key is to balance bold colors with neutrals and avoid overwhelming patterns.
2. Time Your Session
Lighting is crucial in photography, and as a photographer, I always aim to shoot within the golden hour timeframe. This is the hour right after sunrise and the hour right before sunset when the light is soft and flattering. Outside of this window, especially closer to noon, you may encounter harsh shadows and less flattering light.
However, I understand that babies and younger children may not be able to stay up late for a 9 p.m. sunset. To accommodate this, we can plan for a location with more shaded areas or discuss alternative timing options that work best for everyone. Talking with your photographer about your specific needs will help ensure a great outcome regardless of the time of day.
3. Prepare for Posing
Don’t worry about knowing all the right poses. Your photographer will guide you through various poses and angles to capture the best version of you. To make things easier, check out Pinterest and share poses you love with your photographer. It’s also helpful to discuss any poses or angles you’re not fond of, or any problem areas you’d like to avoid. For example, I personally avoid profile shots because I think my nose looks too prominent, so I steer clear of those in my family photos.
4. Discuss Your Vision
Communicate with your photographer about what you want from the session. Share any specific ideas or themes you have in mind, and discuss any locations or props you’d like to use. It’s also crucial to choose a photographer whose editing style matches your vision. For instance, I prefer a high-contrast edit, while others might prefer a light and airy or dark and moody style. Ensuring your photographer’s style aligns with your preferences will result in images that you’ll love.
5. Bring the Essentials
For portrait sessions, consider bringing a few essentials, such as makeup for touch-ups, a hairbrush, or even a change of clothes. If you have any personal items or props you’d like to include, don’t forget to bring those along too.
6. Relax and Have Fun
The most important tip is to relax and enjoy the experience! Don’t worry about knowing what to do—your photographer will come with prompts to capture wonderful candid photos and real emotions. A positive attitude and genuine smiles will naturally come through in your photos. Remember, the session is about capturing your personality and creating memories, so have fun with it!
7. Be on Time
Punctuality helps ensure you have ample time for the session and can make the most of your scheduled time slot. Arriving a bit early can also give you a moment to settle in and discuss any last-minute details with your photographer.
8. Ask About Image Delivery
Find out how and when you’ll receive your images. Many photographers offer digital galleries, prints, or albums. Knowing this in advance helps set expectations and ensures you’re excited about how you’ll receive your photos.
9. Trust the Process
Lastly, trust your photographer’s expertise. They’ve been through this countless times and know how to bring out the best in you. Let them guide you, and don’t hesitate to ask for guidance if you’re unsure about something.
Preparing for a photography session doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning and a positive attitude, you’ll be set to have a great time and end up with stunning photos that you’ll cherish for years to come. Happy shooting!
