How to Prep Kids for Family Photos (With Hopefully Less Stress)
Let’s be real: family photos with kids can feel like herding cats. Somebody’s missing a shoe, someone else suddenly hates the outfit you picked, and by the time you’re in the car, you’re already sweating. Been there, mama.
But here’s the good news — it doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, the sessions where kids are giggly, silly, and even a little wild? Those end up being some of my absolute favorites. Because real life is beautiful.
✨ Here are a few tricks that make the day easier:
- Keep outfits comfortable.
- If your toddler feels itchy or stiff, it’ll show in every photo. Choose clothes they can move in — soft cottons, flowy dresses, layers you can add or take off. Bare feet in the grass? Totally fine.
- Bring a favorite toy or blanket.
- That scruffy stuffed animal you thought about leaving at home? Bring it. It’s part of your child’s story right now, and if it helps them feel safe, it’s worth including. (And honestly, it makes the photos sweeter.)
- Snacks are your best friend.
- I don’t mean bright red suckers that stain lips (though… we’ll laugh if it happens). Think mess-free treats: fruit snacks, mini crackers, or something bite-sized to use as a quick reset.
- Don’t expect “perfect.”
- Kids wiggle. They pout. Sometimes they flat-out refuse to look at the camera. And that’s okay. The best photos are the ones where you’re laughing together, twirling in the field, or sneaking a hug when they finally climb into your lap. Those are the photos you’ll want framed.
At the end of the day, it’s not about stiff poses or Pinterest-perfect smiles — it’s about freezing this chapter of your life. The chaos, the sweetness, the way your little one’s hand still fits in yours. That’s what matters.
